General Notes:
From Jack Hawker: AHawker@bigfoot.com
Sarah was born in Townsend Township, Sandusky County Ohio, near the town of Fremont. She was the only child of John Lytle and Polly Perry, they were only married a short time, 1843 - 1845. By the time of the 1850 census her mother had married James Lumbert and Sarah was living with James, Polly and children of James’ first marriage and two children that had been born to James and Polly since their marriage in 1846. There is also a Sarah Lytle a 7 year old living with John Lytle in the 1850 census, so she may have been included in the census twice or there was another John Lytle with a daughter Sarah, which is possible.. Have not found a divorce record for John and Polly, nothing known about the circumstances of their marriage. Some time before the 1860 census the Lumberts moved to Odessa in Ionia County, Michigan. In 1861 Sarah married Ransford who lived in Evart, Osceloa County, some distance from Odessa. Don’t know how they got together. Both the Perry and Johnson families were from New York, possibly the familes knew each other in New York and arranged the marriage. Ransford was 13 years older than Sarah, she was only 16 when they married. Sarah and Ransford homesteaded a section of land near Evart which they farmed. The 1900 census says Sarah had 5 children, 3 surviving to adulthood. I only found records for the birth of 4, all girls. The 1900 census has Sarah living with her daughter Merrill and granddaughter Pearl in a house in Evart. Sarah is listed as the owner of the house. Her last name is recorded as Thompson in the 1900 census. I think this was a mistake by the census taker, found no evidence she had married anyone named Thompson. The census record for years married has a 39 crossed out and 20 written in above. I guess this would mean Sarah and Ransford seperated about 1881, don't know if they actually divorced. At this time Sarah’s occupation is Hotel Cook, she was probably working for George Trumble, her son-in-law, at the Trumbell House. Sarah, along with most of the relatives in the area moved to Seattle about 1908. The Seattle City Directories from this period show that Sarah moved around quite a bit, sometimes living with relatives, other times alone. Around 1915 the directories start showing her as a widow. Don’t know at this time when Ransford died. Sarah remained close to her daughters over the years and my impression is she was quite an influence over the family. When I was born in 1935 Sarah was 91 years old. The Seattle Times printed a front page picture of Sarah holding me with a story about the living 5 generations. I can remember Sarah, she, along with several of her daughters and grand daughter Pearl lived in a small old house in the Crown Hill area of Seattle. Richard and me would visit with our mother. The living room was very small and had a large oil heater that made the room very hot. Richard and I would amuse ourselves' with a stenographic viewer, a hand held device that held special cards with the same picture printed on them side by side. When you viewed them through the viewer you got a 3D effect. Sarah was active in the Seventh Day Adventist Church, don't know when she became a member.
