HARTWICK TOWNSHIP PIONEER GONE
In the passing away of Mrs. Lucy PEEL, Hartwick township loses one of its oldest settlers. She with her husband, Charles Peel, who died several years ago, and family of then three children, came to the home on which he had always lived, in 1868, suffering the privations and difficulties that came to pioneer life. Lucy A. LEEMAN was born in Newfane, Niagara county, New York, July 6, 1843. She came with her parents when twelve years of age to Paris, Kent county, Michigan. She was married to Charles Peel January 1, 1860, in Paris, Kent county. To them were born nine children, one dying in infancy, all the rest are living in or near the state. She went the last week in June to visit her son, Albert and family near Midland, and on July 6 (her 77th birthday) had a fall from which she never rallied. She was a victim of the influenza during the winter and it left her weak, that with the nervous shock of the fall was more than her constitution could forbear. Her children were summoned Saturday, July 10, and on Monday night, July 13, she was taken where sickness and pain are not known. Her life was one of service, she was always ready to go to help in sickness and trouble in her younger life to neighbors and all who needed help and when older grown her children always found her ready to go and do what she could to help them. She has had the care of two grandchildren almost from infancy, the mother, Mrs. Harvey Peel, dying when the youngest was but a wee child. Her last wish was that she might live a few more years that she might still care for these children. She was a devoted mother and a faithful and devoted member to the Baptist church, always attending when at all possible. She leaves to mourn her loss eight children, thirty-two grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren with many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at the home Thursday at ten o'clock. Interment in Cherry Valley cemetery.
