1-Car Collision is Fatal to Ray Peel and Zeeland Child.

Zeeland - A two car collision on M-21 a mile west of Zeeland, Saturday night claimed the lives of Ray Elmer Peel, 42 of 762 Scribner Ave., NW, Grand Rapids, and Franklin De Young Jr, two year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Franklin DeYoung of Zeeland, route 1.

The cars were driven by the father of the dead child and Peel. Critically injured in the accident were Mr. and Mrs. DeYoung, who were taken to the Zeeland hospital where they were not expected to live, according to coroner Gilbert VandeWater of Holland. Both parents suffered skull fractures.

Less seriously injured was Shirley DeYoung, nine year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. DeYoung. She suffered fractures of both legs and one arm.

Deputies investigating the accident quoted witnesses as saying that Peel's car was traveling at an excessive speed when the crash occurred. the two cars met head on.
Hospital attendants said that the De Young infant died from a" serious head injury".

Mr. Peel is survived by two sons, Paul, of Saugatuck, and Robert, of Grand Rapids; two daughters, Miss Doris Peel of Saugatuck, and Mrs. Evelyn Thompson. Holland; his mother, Mrs. Flora Smith, Grand Rapids; two brothers, Earl, Grand Rapids, and Clyde, Grand Haven and two sisters, Mrs. Beatrice Shampine and Mrs. Mary Armstrong, both of Grand Rapids.

Funeral services for Ray Peel will be held from the Van Zantwick Funeral chapel Tuesday at 2:30 p.m., with Dr. Edwin Bouldrey, pastor of Grand Haven Methodist church, officiatinng. Burial will be in Lake Forest cemetery.

He was born in Evart in November, 1898, and was a resident of Grand Haven and vicinity the past 20 years, coming from Evart. He was a commercial fisherman in Grand Haven and Saugatuck for ten years. For the past four months he was associated with his brothers in the Peel Brothers Transfer Co. of Grand Rapids. His wife, the former Johanna Vander Meiden of Grand Haven, died last May. Peel was a World war veteran, having served in the United States navy on destroyers and was a member of the American legion of Saugatuck. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Flora Peel of Grand Rapids; two daughters and two sons, Mrs. James Thompson of Holland and Doris, Paul and Robert of Saugatuck; two brothers and two sisters, Earl of Grand Rapids, Clyde of Grand Haven and Mrs. Edward Shampine and Mrs. Theron Armstrong of Grand Rapids.

The accident involved automobiles driven by Peel and De Young. Peel, who had been spending considerable time in Saugatuck, was driving westward en route to Saugatuck from Grand Rapids where he had gone
